Eighteen little blue penguins from the North Island are taking up residency in the south today.
The penguins are being flown from Napier's Marineland to Christchurch, to become the latest addition to the International Antarctic Centre.
Director Richard Benton says the birds will be part of the centre's New Zealand Penguin Encounter. He says they are fortunate because they have had a second chance after being injured in the wild.
