Wellington barrister John Stephen Kos QC will be sitting on the other side of the bench next month.
He has been appointed a High Court judge from April 18, Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson said.
Justice Kos graduated with an LLB (Hons) from Victoria University in 1981 and won the Chapman Tripp Centenary Prize for his graduating year. In 1985 he received an LLM from Cambridge University.
He was previously a partner at Russell McVeagh and became a barrister sole in 2005 and Queen's Counsel in 2007. He is currently Pro-Chancellor of Massey University and an honorary lecturer in law at Victoria University.
He will be sworn in on May 5 and sit on the bench in Wellington.
