A new heritage park near Kerikeri celebrating the site of New Zealand's first sermon was officially opened to the public today.
The 46ha Rangihoua Heritage Park marks the spot where Reverend Samuel Marsden delivered his sermon 200 years ago.
The park features a visitor facility and a pathway with historical displays and interpretative panels, leading to where the Marsden Cross Memorial was erected in 1907.
Today's opening is the result of eight years of collaboration between the Marsden Cross Trust Board, the Anglican Church, Northland iwi Ngati Torehina/Ngapuhi and the Department of Conservation.
The park was officially opened this morning by the Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae.
