KEY POINTS:
Ford of Europe has confirmed a high-performance RS version of the Focus hatchback is being developed.
The new car is not due until 2009, but the company released a teaser image last week.
The new Focus RS will be based on the present ST, which is known as the XR5 in New Zealand and Australia. It will be developed by Ford Team RS, a specialist department within the Blue Oval's European operations.
"With two consecutive Manufacturers' World Rally Championship titles under our belt, the time is right to create a new Focus RS," says John Fleming, Ford of Europe's chief executive.
Ford will not reveal any of the technical details of the new Focus RS until closer to launch in 2009. The company plans to show a concept version in mid-2008.
