The Auckland City Council has produced new figures showing footpath renewal costs rose by 17 per cent in the same year the council negotiated a 6 per cent price discount. Earlier council figures showed a 37 per cent jump between the 2006-07 and 2007-08 years.
The reasons for the 17 per cent increase include a 5.7 per cent cost adjustment to the footpath contracts and a lot more kerb and channel work in the 2007-08 financial year.
The figures surfaced after the report of an independent inquiry into double payments on some footpath renewal work. It alluded to the discount as one reason transport officers did not stop the double payments amounting to $140,000.The city plans to verify the accuracy of double payments to John Fillmore Contractors and its counter-claims for unpaid work.
