The Manawatu Standard has appointed its current deputy editor Jo Myers as editor.
Myers takes control on October 18 when Clive Lind starts a new post in Wellington as Fairfax New Zealand's editorial development manager. Fairfax New Zealand owns the Manawatu Standard.
Myers will be the Standard's first woman editor.
Her promotion is the culmination of a long and successful career in journalism, Standard general manager Paul Elenio said.
She has worked at the Standard for the past 11 years, most recently as news editor and deputy editor.
Earlier in her career Myers, 53, worked in a variety of radio news positions and co-owned with her husband, John Myers, a community newspaper in the Wairarapa.
