Major General Richard Rhys Jones has officially taken over as the new head of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) following a ceremony in Auckland today.
After five years in command of the NZDF, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae handed his post over to Maj Gen Jones at Government House.
During the ceremony, Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand presented Maj Gen Jones with his warrant and promotion to Lieutenant General.
Warrant Officer Class 1 Alan Cunningham was also appointed to Warrant Officer of the NZDF, the most senior non-commissioned appointment in the NZDF. He will be a key advisor to the Maj Gen Jones.
He will also be responsible for the NZDF strategic direction, including issues such as morale, welfare and conditions of service.
Maj Gen Jones, who has been in charge of the army, has been appointed for three years rather than the usual five-year term. His term may be extended.
Lt Gen Mateparae has left to run the Government Communications Security Bureau.
