Ms Mckenzie was formerly a senior sergeant with Masterton police before taking up a role as response manager in Upper Hutt, a position that saw her commuting over the hill every day.
She then worked as a training manager at the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Avalon, before deciding to find a job closer to home in Masterton, where her two children attend school.
"I just felt like it was time to do something different ... it was such a great opportunity to have a true community-based role."
As well as being responsible for community development, Ms McKenzie is overseeing the Events Centre staff, which includes the information centre, library, and cultural services and events team members.
With Monday her first day in the new role, she was still settling in but said one of her goals was to see different groups working together more.
"I want to see a coming together of the groups for community events - having a bit of a joint approach."
Ms McKenzie already had contacts she could put to good use and had been involved with the Wairarapa social sector trial from her time in the police.
"I've had some involvement in the community, but now I'm focussing on vulnerable groups."
She was looking forward to hearing from people about what they wanted for their community, Ms McKenzie said.
"If they can get into contact with me, that would be great."
