Rotorua's visitor industry and local politicians are to take a closer look at pushing for a new charge for thieves who target tourists.
It has been suggested by Rotorua lawyer Jonathan Temm that a new offence called "theft from a tourist" be introduced and that it carry a mandatory jail term.
Fresh calls for harsher penalties for criminals who target tourists have followed the recent theft of and from several vans and campervans being used by visitors to Rotorua.
Some tourists lost everything and police suspect a gang of thieves is responsible.
