New charge for Kiwi fraud accused

A New Zealand man accused of defrauding Queensland Health of more than A$11 million will face a new charge in court today.

Queensland Health employee Hohepa Morehu-Barlow, who was charged in December with fraud and accused of funnelling money into his own accounts, will be charged with at least one more offence, says his lawyer Adam McGill.

"There's going to be an additional charge referred in respect to more money, which has been alleged against us,'' Mr McGill told ABC Radio.

"My client will be formally charged at the bench.

"It's another day for us to obtain some paper work from the crown, which is essentially going to be evidence against us.''

Mr Morehu-Barlow, also known as Joel Barlow, has had his assets frozen and is on remand.

Queensland Health employees have been asked to declare any gifts they received from Mr Morehu-Barlow.

In an email on Friday, staff were asked to register even "non-tangible'' gifts such as their attendance at functions hosted by Mr Morehu-Barlow.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh remained hopeful someone would own up to receiving a gift.

"I understand there has been nothing coming forward, but I am also aware some people are coming off leave,'' Ms Bligh said.

The Crimes and Misconduct Commission is conducting an investigation into the roles of Queensland Health and police in not thoroughly following up a tip-off in late 2010 about possible misappropriation of funds.
