Alastair Carruthers has been appointed chair of the Council of Creative New Zealand, Prime Minister Helen Clark announced today.
Miss Clark, who is also Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, praised Mr Carruthers' commitment to his current position as chair of the Arts Board of Creative New Zealand.
"I look forward to having his governance skills and experience at the helm of the Council of Creative New Zealand," she said.
Creative New Zealand chief executive Stephen Wainwright welcomed the appointment.
"He is familiar with our business and keenly aware of the issues faced by the New Zealand arts sector," Mr Wainwright said.
Creative New Zealand encourages, promotes and supports the arts. It is responsible for overall policy development and determines the division of funding between the arts boards.
Mr Carruthers is chief executive of the law firm Chapman Tripp. He originally trained as a classical musician and is a former trustee of the New Zealand String Quartet.
