An investigation is under way following a sudden death in Christchurch last night.
Emergency services were alerted to a person in critical condition in the seaside suburb of New Brighton at about 7.20pm yesterday.
“The person was transported to hospital, however, sadly they passed away sometime later,” said a police spokesperson.
The circumstances around the death are being treated as unexplained.
Locals can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while they conduct their scene examination, police say.
Inquiries into the cause of death are ongoing.
Hato Hone St John said it was notified of an incident at a private residential address in New Brighton yesterday.
“We will not be providing any further information,” a spokesperson said, referring the Herald to police for further details.
