Ivoni Fuimaono, the mother of Halatau Naitoko, the young courier driver fatally shot by police on an Auckland motorway, has given birth to a baby boy today.
The 3kg boy - Mrs Fuimaono's 10th child - will be named Tau after his late brother, said family spokesman Peter Sykes.
Mr Naitoko died in the crossfire as police shot at a man who had led them on a high speed pursuit from west Auckland to the northern motorway two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the man at the centre of the shooting, Stephen Hohepa McDonald, 50, reappeared in Auckland District Court today, facing 29 charges over the police pursuit, theft of vehicles and firearms offences.
Outside the court his lawyer Roger Chambers told NZPA that McDonald was very upset when he found out someone had died as a result of his actions.
He wrote a letter to the family of Halatau Naitoko expressing his regrets.
"I think he's very sad about the whole incident, and I don't know if he's come to terms with it."
He said the methamphetamine user and had no memory for five days leading up to the incident.
McDonald was remanded in custody to reappear again on March 27.
