Wairarapa will have a new coach when they look to defend their regional super league netball title in March and April
Kelly Sargent, who guided the team to success in the inaugural competition last year, is standing down from the job due to impending motherhood although she has not completely ruled out the possibility of playing in some of the latter games.
"Coaching isn't on, but playing??..well, if they need me to make up the numbers through injuries or something like that then, yes, I would give it serious thought," she said.
A former national league player herself, Sargent said it would be "very wrong" for pundits to make Wairarapa favourites for the 2006 super league simply because they were the defending champions.
Firstly .this year's squad would not resemble anything like that of last year with at least four others joining Sargent on the unavailables list, Emma Foote, Carlene Karaitiana, Lisa Butler and Ashleigh Somerville.
"We are losing a lot of experience, and that sort of thing is very difficult to replace," she said. "Basically half of last year's line-up is gone??.. that has to make life a lot tougher, doesn't it?"
Sargent is adamant too that the quality of opposition in 2006 will be stronger than it was in 2005 with entries having grown from eight to 12 and some of the top club sides in Wellington joining the fold.
"The overall quality of play will be better, I think that can be taken for granted," Sargent said. " We had to work hard to win most of our games last year, we will have to work even harder this time."
Having said that though Sargent isn't by any means discounting the possibility of Wairarapa winning the super league for a second successive season.
She has been impressed by the number of talented youngsters coming through the age groups in Wairarapa and expects them to be at the forefront when the selection process heats up with trials over the next fortnight or so.
"We certainly shouldn't lack anything on the score of potential??..our top young players are right up there with the very best in the Wellington region," she said.
Sargent said how the younger members of the Wairarapa squad stood up to the physical demands of super league matches would play a huge part in the team's success, or otherwise.
"Physically, it will be a whole new ball game from what they have experienced at club level here," she said. "Teams try to bully you into submission and if you aren't prepared to fight with fire then you become pretty much redundant. You have to get in there and mix it??.otherwise you're a goner."
