KEY POINTS:
A Nelson swimmer has been flown to hospital this afternoon suffering deep wounds from a suspected shark attack.
The attack happened about 3.30pm at Kina Beach, midway between Nelson and Motueka.
Sergeant Mark Kaveney, of Nelson police, said the man suffered deep torso wounds and possible internal injuries .
He was conscious but in a great deal of pain and was transferred to Nelson Hospital by helicopter for treatment.
Police quickly cleared the public from beaches in the area.
