A large scrub fire south of Nelson has been contained but may take a week to fully extinguish.
The fire, which began about 4.15pm in the Tadmor Valley area, about 45km southwest of Nelson, was fanned by strong winds and spread overnight to cover 200-300 hectares of pine plantation, scrub and native bush.
Fire services managed to get the fire under control on the northeastern flank of the area about 9am.
Waimea rural fire authority spokesman Tim King said nearby homes were evacuated at 5pm with one building damaged and another reported destroyed.
Mr King said nine helicopters now at the scene would do the bulk of the firefighting work, assisted by fire appliances and earthmoving equipment.
He said it could take up to a week to extinguish the fire.
