A 22-year-old Tauranga man is in critical condition after being pulled from under his car by a neighbour on Wednesday night.
The victim was working on the car in a garage in Devonport Road when the vehicle came off its supports, falling and crushing him.
Neighbour Stan Gyde heard his screams and went to help.
"As soon as I realised what had happened I grabbed my jack and ran over," he said.
He used his jack to lift the front part of the vehicle, which was completely covering the man.
"I could see his head there, but he'd gone purple. I just thought the poor bugger was dead," he told SunLive news website.
"I didn't think he had a shot in hell. I just thought he was a bloody lucky boy."
Emergency services arrived moments later and the man was taken to Tauranga Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said today he was in a critical but stable condition.
