KEY POINTS:
The SPCA is horrified at the state of a neglected dog found in Auckland on Christmas Eve.
Inspectors found the animal, which they are calling Eve, at a property in Glen Innes, after a neighbour reported the dog had been shut underneath the house.
The owners are away for Christmas, but Inspector Todd Neal says the animal has obviously been without food for a long time.
He says it is the worst case he has seen in nine years with the SPCA.
Mr Neal says Eve looked like a carcass, and could barely lift her own head to acknowledge him.
He says she had apparently survived by eating her own faeces.
She had such a sweet forgiving nature that she touched the hearts of SPCA staff.
General Manager David Lloyd-Barker said every effort will be made to locate the owners and prosecute them.
