KEY POINTS:
Auckland Museum streamed the necropsy of a great white shark this lunchtime to thousands of internet viewers.
The procedure was also watched by hundreds at the museum itself.
The shark was found dead in a gill net by a fisherman last week in the Kaipara Harbour.
It weighed 300kg and was 3m long.
The operation, which Auckland Museum Marine curator Tom Trnski was due to perform with the Department of Conservation's Clinton Duffy, examined the shark's stomach contents and take measurements of its internal organs.
