Figures out from Statistics New Zealand today underline the drift to New Zealand's three main cities.
Almost half the country's working population now works in either Auckland, Wellington or the Canterbury region.
The report shows most people live reasonably close to their work, with three quarters having to travel less than ten kilometres. However commuting distances are growing, with Aucklanders having to travel the furthest.
For instance, 40 per cent of working people in the Rodney District commute to either the North Shore or Auckland city.
