The Navy is heading to the Russian port of Vladivostok for the first time.
The Anzac frigate HMNZS Te Mana and the supply ship HMNZS Endeavour will be the first Navy ships to visit Vladivostok in east Russia. The diplomatic visit to the area in a few months will also take in Japan and China.
Chief of Navy Rear Admiral David Ledson said the visit reflected New Zealand's global interests.
"The role of the Defence Force is with the other arms of the Government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to go overseas and promote and protect New Zealand's interests and this is promoting our interests."
Admiral Ledson said the China visit followed a highly successful visit by him last year.
"The response was fantastic. I was extremely well hosted by my counterpart and I got about 40 minutes with the Minister of Defence.
"I think it reflects the high regard with which New Zealand is held but also the high reputation of the New Zealand Defence Force."
