The frigate Te Mana yesterday rescued a Thai man believed to have drifted for six hours in Malaysian waters after falling off his fishing boat.
The frigate was taking part in a military exercise when its crew spotted the naked man in waters off northeastern peninsular Malaysia.
The man, Ismail Adam, 22, from Pattani province in neighbouring southern Thailand, was calm but very cold when the New Zealanders pulled him from the water.
Commander Lance Cook, commanding officer of HMNZS Te Mana, said the real time rescue was a great achievement.
"The crew of Te Mana reacted swiftly and professionally, and we are pleased to have been able to assist in such a rescue. Taking time out from our operational activities to save a life is a real success."
