Members of New Zealand's navy were tasked with protecting nine very precious kiwi this week.
A navy helicopter crew, headed by pilot lieutenant Alex Trotter, flew the birds from the Coromandel Peninsula to their new home on Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf on Wednesday.
The birds were re-located as part of a Department of Conservation (DoC) plan to boost kiwi numbers. Under the plan, kiwi are moved to new areas once sustainable populations are established.
Mr Trotter said the crew felt "incredibly privileged" to be involved.
"The aircraft's primary role is maritime surveillance and warfare, however this was yet another example of just how capable and adaptive the aircraft and our crews can be.
