KEY POINTS:
The third of four new Navy inshore patrol boats has been named Pukaki. The first two are called Rotoiti and Hawea. The fourth, Taupo, is being fitted out before being launched in July.
Building and Construction Minister Shane Jones, attending Pukaki's naming at Whangarei on behalf of Defence Minister Phil Goff, said it was the name of the New Zealand frigate that went to Christmas Island (now Kiritimati) in 1957 and witnessed British nuclear bomb trials.
Mr Jones said a veteran of that mission, Leon Flavell, now 74, attended the naming ceremony at the weekend.
