Carterton can claim success at the national secondary schools cross country champion ships over the weekend.
Winner of his age group there was Corey Casey, who lives in Carterton but attends St Pat's Silverstream. He had won the Wellington title in the same grade earlier in the season.
For the Carterton-based Rumahanga Ramblers Saturday's event over a 1600m course at the Ravensdown storage depot at Taratahi took the form of a relay.Both the Furkert and Lang families fielded three-person teams for the five lap race with the other two teams having just the two members
Times were:Furkert family (Tracey, Matthew and Paul) 39.25, Lang family (Ester, Ali and Greg) 42.52, Ray Wallis and Craig Ewing 43.25, Norm Wilton and Steve Britland 50.15.
The annual Sanders-Gough inter-club event featuring Trentham United, Hutt Valley, Rimutaka, Wainuiomata and Aurora clubs from the Hutt Valley and the Masterton and Carterton clubs from Wairarapa will be hosted by the Trentham club at their headquarters at Memorial Park next Saturday. The Hutt Valley has dominated the men's race in recent times although masterton has managed to grad a couple of victories there.The other grades tend to be more open with some of the smaller clubs doing well in the younger age groups.
Start times are: Walkers over 4km 1pm; Challenge Shield (boys and girls under-14) 2km 1.15pm; Gough Cup (men and women under-20), 6km 1.45pm; Burns Cup (open and Masters women) 6km 1.45pm; Robbie Shield (girls and boys under-17) 3km 1.55pm; Sanders Cup (open men and Masters men) 8km 2.30pm
Transport for those contesting the open or Master's men's race will leave St David's Church at 1.15pm while non-travellers from the Ramblers will contest a run-walk starting at the Carterton tennis courts carpark at 2pm.
