KEY POINTS:
The country's national news agency the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) is axing seven full time jobs as part of a plan to cut costs.
- NZPA chief executive Lincoln Gould said the organisation's shareholders, the country's major newspaper publishers, wanted costs reduced but efficiency enhanced.
Gould said the agency's international wire services would also be rationalised.
- NZPA provides news, images and other services to all daily and Sunday newspapers, as well as television, radio and internet customers.
The cuts reduce staff numbers to 48.
Consultation with all staff will continue over the next two weeks before final decisions are made, he said.
