Former National MP Aaron Gilmore has been returned to Parliament after the retirement from national politics of former Speaker Lockwood Smith.
Mr Gilmore, an MP in the 2008-11 National Government, was officially returned today by the Electoral Commission.
Mr Smith is going to London to take up the position of New Zealand High Commissioner.
He had been an MP since 1984, representing Rodney from 1996 to 2011 before being returned on the National list. His fellow MPs elected him Speaker in 2008 and again in 2011.
