The sheep population has dropped 2.4 per cent to a 10-year low as farmers cull flocks because of a drought on the North Island's East Coast.
Meat & Wool New Zealand's economic service said the national flock numbers fell to 39.1 million, from 40.1 million last year and 46.1 million in 1997.
