National says scarce health dollars are being spent on sex change operations while people have to wait for essential surgery.
The Herald on Sunday reported today that a 73-year-old transsexual is going to have gender-changing surgery with taxpayers picking up the $30,000 bill.
The report said Vicki Harvey, of Opunake, used to be a professional soldier and served 20 years in the New Zealand army.
"She went to a battalion reunion this year in a skirt and blouse."
"National will have to be convinced that any gender reassignment surgery carried out under the public system on its watch is justified," health spokesman Paul Hutchison said.
"We have a major problem when the taxpayer foots the bill, while other New Zealanders are forced to line up for the simple things."
Dr Hutchison said the operation was expected to be carried out next year.
"Many people further back in the elective surgery queue will be understandably angry with that," he said.
"Most New Zealanders will be appalled that scarce health dollars are being spent on sex change operations while people line up for hip, hernia and gall bladder surgery."
