SIXTY of New Zealand's top 4WD competitors descended on a farm near Eketahuna on Sunday for a round of the nation 4x4 national series.
In dry and windy conditions and watched by a large crowd, the crews tackled 30 hazards ranging in difficulty from tough to virtually impossible.
John Brock, Wairarapa 4WD Club secretary, said the event had gone off very well and visiting competitors had enjoyed the conditions and competition. He added that the club was pleased with both the size of the crowd and their behaviour.
The dry weather had been hard on equipment, and several crews suffered mechanical problems.
There had also been quite a few rollovers, including a couple where vehicles went end for end, he said, but stringent safety provisions meant only one person was slightly hurt. That was a woman who banged her knees against the dashboard.
Brock said that any vehicle that rolled had to be scrutineered before continuing.
The event, sponsored by Southey Nissan, was the penultimate national round, with the final being held in Tauranga.
