One dog is dead and one is missing, but their owner managed to escape a house fire safely.
Firefighters were called to a blaze on Masonic St in Masterton about 10.20pm last night.
There were reports people were still inside the single-storey house, that was well alight when they got there, but a woman in the house had got out safely.
Masterton station officer Doug Flowerday said there were two dogs at the property. One was confirmed dead, the other was missing and the owner was "distraught".
"The whole house is heat and smoke damaged and probably about a third of the house is very fire damaged," Mr Flowerday said.
