A group of Napier residents are taking a stand against the tough law and order policies of the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
They have formed the Really Sensible Sentencing Trust.
Spokesman Labour list MP Russell Fairbrother says they believe that only the worst criminals should be sent to jail. He says common thieves, taggers and disqualified drivers do not deserve to be locked up.
Mr Fairbrother says he does not excuse or condone criminal behaviour, but changes are need for how criminals are dealt with. He says there are some people behind bars who can be redirected out of prison. He says criminals who want to live lawful lifestyles need support to go good.
