A Napier motorcycle rider who suffered serious head injuries in a crash on Friday afternoon in the Wharerata Hills south of Gisborne has died of his injuries in Waikato Hospital.
The 58-year-old man and his Ducati motorcycle left SH2 on the Gisborne side of Morere Hill and smashed into a culvert.
He was flown to Gisborne Hospital by the ECT rescue helicopter and transferred to Waikato for intensive medical care on Friday night.
"The injured man passed away in hospital at the weekend," a police spokesman said this morning.
Gisborne police have a serious crash investigation underway.
