Name suppression lapses for murder accused

Name suppression has lapsed for a man accused of bludgeoning an elderly man to death with a bottle.

Turei Rawiri Kingi, 26, of no fixed abode was charged with the murder of Hamilton man Jacques Donker on August 10.

Mr Donker was found slumped over in one of the cubicles of the London St toilets, near the intersection with Victoria St.

A post mortem revealed Mr Donker died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Suppression on Kingi's name lapsed on August 21.

Waikato police Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson earlier described Mr Donker's death as an opportunistic crime, with him simply being in the "wrong place at the wrong time".

"The man sustained an assault, horrific injuries, causing his death inside one of the cubicles."

Mr Donker's vehicle was stolen and a police chase ensued coming to an end on State Highway 1 at Mercer after road spikes were deployed.

Kingi, who is yet to enter a plea on the charge, is due to reappear in the High Court at Hamilton on Tuesday.
