KEY POINTS:
Alfa Romeo has released the first pictures of Mi.To, its new supermini-sized small car.
The model will be launched in Europe mid-year, although it won't appear in New Zealand until 2009.
Widely regarded as a successor to the classic Alfasud from the 1970s, the Mi.To is even smaller than the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, at just over four metres in length (about the same as a Fiat Grande Punto).
The Mi.To marks the debut of the Alfa Romeo DNA system - the next generation of electronic stability control from the marque.
The car's engine, steering response, suspension and gearbox can be set to one of three modes, from sporty to city driving and low-grip conditions.
A range of petrol and diesel engines from the Alfa Romeo range will be offered.
What's with the name? The first half of the Mi.To monicker refers to the marque's home city of Milan, while the second makes reference to Torino (Turin), the home of parent company Fiat and the city where the car will be built.
