Mysterious packages from Paris have been showing up in West Coast letterboxes this week.
Police said a number of people in Greymouth and Hokitika had received parcels containing an electric hairdryer or clippers, and 100 euros (NZ$164) in an envelope, with the message "thanks for being a good/true friend" on the envelope.
None of the recipients knew the people who had sent the items, and each parcel came from a different person and a different address in Paris.
The recipients took their packages to the police to inspect the goods and try to track down the benefactor. They are keen to hear from anyone else who has received similar parcels.
