The mystery of how a young Frenchman came to be seriously injured in a Wellington street early on Saturday continues to baffle police.
The 24-year-old is in a stable condition with serious head and arm injuries in Wellington Hospital, but requires surgery to his skull.
He was found semi-conscious, bleeding heavily, near the corner of Durham and Aro Streets around 2am by occupants of a nearby house.
Detective Sergeant Mark Scott, of Wellington CIB, told NZPA today no witnesses had come forward to explain how the man got from Courtenay Place, where he had been out with friends on Friday night to where he was found, or what had happened to him.
"We're not much further ahead, we're just trying to piece bits together in the absence of witnesses," Mr Scott said.
He said the man became separated from his friends about midnight.
He could not remember what had happened or how he came by his injuries.
"He's still recovering from his head injuries, he's got to have surgery ... that might help with his memory, you never know, time might heal," Mr Scott said.
Police were still in the process of obtaining CCTV footage that might show the Frenchman in Courtenay Place or en route to where he was found.
"We also want to hear from anyone who may have spoken to this man or seen him in Courtenay Place in the early hours of Saturday morning."
He has dark hair and was wearing dark jeans, a dark top, a brown leather jacket and glasses.
