Six mutilated and dead puppies were discovered yesterday in a residential street.
Most of them were found to have stab wounds and some of the heads were almost completely removed.
A Blenheim resident found the dead animals dumped on a car in a carport in Percy St.
Senior Constable Russell Smith said the discovery was "understandably very distressing".
Mr Smith said police believe the animals, which were only a day or two old, had been put there between 4.30pm and 5pm on Monday.
Marlborough SPCA manager Amy Stevens said it was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty she had come across in the region and the society would "severely prosecute" those responsible.
"It doesn't matter if they were one-day-old or what kind of animal they were, cruelty like this is extremely bad and is something that needs to be stamped out," Ms Stevens said.
