A seabird expert has described the discovery of mutilated flesh-footed shearwaters in sand dunes as "barbaric and completely unacceptable''.
The carcasses of 18 of the endangered New Zealand seabirds were found dumped in sand dunes at Ruakaka with their throats cut, skulls smashed and wings broken.
The flesh-footed shearwaters have the same protection status as kiwi and yellow eyed penguins - listed as threatened, or nationally vulnerable.
The 18 birds were found dumped in wasteland by the former Ruakaka power station in October. The clump of dead birds was moulded into the shape of a fish bin, indicating they had been in a container and tipped out in the dunes.
Department of Conservation officers collected the birds after they were found by a member of the public. DoC also arranged for the necropsy and notified Forest and Bird.
