Dalefield are taking a "must win" mentality into their Wellington premier division women's hockey match with Indians at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington tomorrow.
While they are two spots above Indians on the competition table second-placed Dalefield have lost to them twice in as many matches this season and coach Rochelle Retter said they were "very determined" not to make it three from three.
"It's not that they have been any better than us, it's just that we have played some pretty ordinary hockey against them," Retter said of the previous two defeats. "Yes, they are a good side but we can beat them, no doubt about that."
For that to happen Dalefield will be focusing on closing down the ball carrier quickly in defensive situations and moving the ball wide, just as quickly, on attack.
And because of the brilliance of the Indians goalkeeper the best in the Wellington area they are also looking to place extra pressure on her by having extra options in front of the opposition goal. "We want two or three players in position to score, not just one," Retter explained.
The Dalefield men also play Indians in a Wellington premier division match at the National Hockey Stadium tomorrow with competition leaders Indians starting the warmest of favourites there.
Dalefield coach Mark Fenwick said his team had no intention, however, of playing a style of hockey aimed mainly at keeping the final scoreline within reasonable bounds. Rather, they would be looking to employ tactics aimed at disrupting their opposition's usual free flowing game.
"We have a few things up our sleeves which hopefully will keep them on their toes," Fenwick said. "We won't be roughing them up, it's more a case of getting in their faces and stopping the fast breaks which are so much a part of their play. If we sit back and let them come to us we'll be goners anyway, they are too classy for that."
