Muslim New Zealanders have been praised by Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres for not giving into prejudice in the face of increased racial tension.
In a speech delivered at the launch of Islam Awareness Week, Mr de Bres congratulated Muslim New Zealanders on their courage and determination not to be intimidated.
"There has been an increase in 'Islamaphobia' in some quarters, as justified anger at the acts of terrorism in London... has been unfairly directed against adherents of Islam in general."
The activities organised for Islam Awareness Week showed Muslims were not giving in to prejudice, but were opening doors to fellow New Zealanders, offering to share what their faith was about and building bridges, Mr de Bres said.
Islam Awareness Week is organised by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand.
The week's activities aim to increase understanding between Muslim and non-Muslims, promote greater tolerance and create new friendships.
