Young Myanmar refugees will be among performers at a show in Auckland on Friday to highlight the detention of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myanmar's military leaders have placed Suu Kyi in "protective custody" since a bloody confrontation in the country's north on May 30.
The show involving Auckland musicians will feature a song-and-dance performance by Burmese now living in the city, including Selwyn College sixth-former Tin Ma Ma.
"We are very worried about her and we are glad to do something in New Zealand to show our support for her," she said in a statement.
Organisers of the show, in inner city Grey Lynn, said proceeds would pay for 30,000 postcards to be available free in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
The postcards, with the words "stand up for freedom", were for signing and sending to Prime Minister Helen Clark in the hope that they might be able to be forwarded to Suu Kyi.
"As a staunch believer in non-violent resistance, Suu Kyi has been standing firm against a brutal military regime for 15 years," show organisers said.
"We want to let her know that she does not stand alone."
