KEY POINTS:
Sir Edmund Hillary has left items from his expedition to Mount Everest, to the Auckland Museum.
Marketing Manager Margie Mellsop said the Hillary family had informed the museum of his wishes as detailed in his will.
She said it was unclear exactly what items they were being offered but the museum was very pleased with the gesture.
Ms Mellsop said there was a lot of paper work to be done and the offer would have to go through a museum curator and the board before it could be accepted.
She said the museum had not yet had "official correspondence" from the family.
Ms Mellsop said until it was known what items had been left, the museum would not know how they would be displayed.
She said the museum had always had a strong relationship with Sir Ed and his family, and has had exhibitions of his trips to Mount Everest and Antarctica.
