Malfunctioning fire doors at Auckland Museum had not posed a danger to visitors to the popular da Vinci Machines exhibition, director Dr Rodney Wilson said.
The doors slammed automatically after a fire alarm on Saturday and staff were unable to open them.
Staff on the outside of the doors also had trouble unlocking them because the doors had handles on one side only.
There was no fire at the museum and it was not clear why the doors had slammed shut.
