A man jailed for a minimum of 17 years for murdering his landlady has been refused an extension of time to appeal his conviction and sentence by the Court of Appeal.
Dean Joseph Shepherd, 45, of Manurewa, pleaded guilty in the Auckland High Court to murdering Darunee Aphiromlerk in October 2004.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of 17 and-a-half years.
The court was told Shepherd owed Ms Aphiromlerk rent money.
He went to her flat in Manurewa where the pair argued.
Shepherd took her to a spare bedroom, bound her hands and feet, gagged her and covered her in a duvet.
Later that night Shepherd drove her to Mercer, still bound and wrapped in the duvet, and dumped her in a stream where she drowned.
