KEY POINTS:
Shiloh Rickard has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Dunedin woman at the weekend.
He made a brief appearance at the Dunedin District Court wearing a blue prison jumpsuit and kept his eyes down.
Rickard, also known as Matthew Te Anini, 46, was remanded to July 26.
He was captured after a 36-hour manhunt at the weekend which ended yesterday with a brief standoff in North Dunedin.
Rickard was charged with murder after he allegedly inflicted multiple stab wounds on 25-year-old Vicki Jane Telfer early on Saturday.
Detective Inspector Ross Pinkham of Dunedin said Rickard was spotted in a garden shed at 2.20pm by students in a Harrow St flat.
Members of the armed offenders squad tracked him down soon after, hiding in a bush in Frederick St.
"Police staff surrounded the area and located Rickard hiding in a garden of a house in Frederick St," Mr Pinkham said.
"Rickard was confronted and ordered to give himself up."
He was quickly apprehended by police tackling him to the ground.
"A weapon was found in his possession but he did not attempt to use it."
Rickard had been eluding police since 2am on Saturday when an altercation broke out between him and Vicki Telfer at her Edwin St home.
Her 18-month-old child and 23-year-old sister, Lisa Telfer, were in the house at the time.
Mr Pinkham said the toddler was uninjured but Lisa Telfer received superficial cuts to her hands.
She managed to escape and alert police from a neighbour's house.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination showed that Vicki Telfer died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
