One man is dead and another has had surgery for serious stab wounds after an incident in Rotorua early today.
Police cordoned off a house in Konene St, Rotorua, and forensic experts were examining it but few other details were available.
The name of the dead man, believed to be 38, was not likely to be released until Sunday, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper said in a statement.
The injured man, 49, had an operation today and police had yet to speak to him, he said.
The murder inquiry began after police were called to the house about 12.20am.
By the time they got there one man was dead and the other had suffered multiple stab wounds.
The wounded man was taken by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital and had surgery earlier today.
"He is believed to be in a serious but stable condition," said Mr Loper.
"The scene at Konene St has been cordoned off and will be the subject of a crime scene investigation."
Mr Loper said police were also doing house-to-house inquiries looking for witnesses or anyone who may have heard noises about midnight.
Police says anyone with information could call the Rotorua police hotline - 0800 TIP OFF (800 847 633).
