KEY POINTS:
Police in Timaru have launched a homicide investigation after the death of a man who was seriously injured in a street attack last Saturday.
Wayne Bray, 26, died in Timaru Hospital late last night, police confirmed today.
Detective Sergeant Marion Neill of Timaru CIB said the Bouverie St assault inquiry was now a homicide investigation.
A 17-year-old youth who was remanded in custody charged with assaulting Mr Bray before a more serious group assault on Saturday night is due in Timaru District Court tomorrow for a bail application.
Ms Neill said it was possible the youth may face further charges.
"We're continuing to talk to witnesses and people of interest and that will continue for the next few days," she said.
A post mortem examination was being done in Christchurch today.
Ms Neill said the homicide inquiry team of 15, including some CIB staff from Christchurch, had been working long hours.
A "large number" of people had already been spoken to, including several who were at a party in Bouverie St near where Mr Bray was assaulted.
