The jury in the trial of Dean Richard Mulligan, 44, of Fielding, who is charged with murdering Marice McGregor, was told by Crown prosecutor Lance Rowe today that the accused "has taken us all for fools, gullible and lacking in common sense".
He said Mulligan had concocted five different versions of events that led to the 45 year-old Wanganui beneficiary's death on April 19 last year.
But his confession to police shortly after last year's killing said it all, Mr Rowe completing his summing up in the trial.
The defence was continuing its summing up this afternoon.
Mulligan is alleged to murdered Ms McGregor in a ravine off State Highway 4, 50km north of Wanganui.
The prosecution says he killed her with three blows to the head with an iron bar.
The defence claims that she was killed by another man.
