KEY POINTS:
New Zealanders may be able to do without many things, but when it comes to travelling it seems they can't do without their mum, according to a survey released yesterday.
Mums were identified as the fourth most important item to take along when heading overseas, behind credit cards, a camera and a copy of a Lonely Planet travel guide.
The NZ survey, conducted for GlobalPlus credit card, also revealed 87 per cent of Kiwis preferred to sit beside family or friends when flying.
Sports stars, especially prominent rugby players, were the second preference, accounting for 5 per cent.
Former All Blacks first five-eighths Andrew Mehrtens was the most favoured rugby player.
